Susan’s Travel Blog – Christmas Markets Tour!
Weather: Rainy, 48 degrees F°
Place: Basel, Switzerland
Food Overview:Eating and drinking are key elements of each Christmas market. Of course, one must have some Gluhwein to stay warm while strolling the market, and to offset the wine, food is in order! Gluhwein is a heated mulled wine with spices.
While we did find it made mostly red wines, there were also some whites on offer (sorry, warm white wine doesn’t do it for me!).
In addition to what I would call “fair food”, such as churros, and sandwiches, there is the requisite bratwurst, served so many different ways (with mustard and sauerkraut, without, just sauerkraut, etc.). There are also some local specialties, such as Champignons (sauteed mushrooms – so good, with butter!), and this wonderful noodle dish made with Parmesan cheese! The noodles are cooked as individual portions, and when al dente, tossed into a Parmesan wheel with olive oil and tossed into a bowl for wonderful munching!
Here’s a video from the Frieberg market – it was just yummy!
Finally, to close this set of travel adventures, it was all worth it to see this bigger-than-life Christmas pyramid!
Thanks for reading – and Happy Holidays!
